Madeline Lane, better known as Maddie, is a mech fighter in the second Trial held by the gods to try and cause a new god to ascend. A complete unknown before Gluttony's selection, she surprised many by fighting her way to the top and eventually becoming the plane's representative. While likely assisted by the Underdog Effect, it's theorized that this was also because the tournament was promoting the kind of growth the Trial is originally intended to cause; starting from the bottom she fought and grew, gaining favor at a rapid enough rate that her mech at the end of the selection was a different beast than it had been at the start. Her next task is to prove herself equal to the high hopes placed upon her - in the eyes of both those watching and in her own.

Maddie is an exceedingly strange pilot for a couple of reasons. One is her ability to maintain her own mech; while she of course can't do it as well as if she had access to a Revelation system, she has enough control of her dreamscape to hasten the regeneration of her mech without breaking it, through meditation. The second, and rather more strange, ability is that she can summon a part of her mech on it's own; one of her semi-intelligent drones, which she affectionately calls "Boo" on the grounds that everyone who sees her with it freaks out.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Madeline’s default setting is to puff herself up, try and show pride and confidence in her abilities, sometimes to the point of bluster and rudeness. This is something of a facade. She’s out of place here. She knows it. She knows everyone else knows it. She’s just some no-name from Gluttony standing among giants. Even her mech is built around only taking shots when they can’t fight back. Her natural persona is one of cheer and friendliness, but she tries to act like a competitor should, at least on first impression.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Maddie is a short young woman, with naturally tan skin. She has bright red hair left loose, and eyes of a similar shade. She’s fairly lean from exercise, but looks like she’s only recently started gaining proper muscle. Generally she tends to wear light, comfortable clothes, since by comparison to gluttony most plains would be downright balmy.

Ethereal Hunter is somewhat bigger than it’s user; Maddie’s 5’2” normally, and the mech is around six and a half feet tall. The helmet is a mono-eye type rather than a visor, allowing for greater field of view. It also has something of a hood in order to help the head blend in a bit more. The armor, such as it is, is segmented into many scales, giving it a somewhat reptilian appearance, although the figure is vaguely feminine. It’s default color is a reddish-brown, but it shifts to match the battlefield once the battle begins.

The mech is unique in that it's a real sniper-style combatant. The core of it's fighting style is Maddie's spark, a cloaking field that renders her nearly completely invisible. There is a tell-tale shimmer that appears if she moves at top speed, although she's still rather difficult to make out against the background, but broadly speaking it allows her to hide in all but the most open arenas, and even in those it becomes difficult to figure out precisely where she is. As a ranged fighter, her primary means of hurting her enemy is her railgun bow, a weapon with a slow rate of fire that more than makes up for it with the speed and power of the projectile. She also has a variety of combat drones that can pepper her enemy with energy attacks, keeping pressure on while she lines up her shots - and more importantly, can act as a conduit for her spells as they can cloak themselves with a similar telltale to the Ethereal Hunter itself, and mask their shots as hers. Her ideal matchup is one in which she never comes face to face with her opponent, taking them down from afar with her railgun-bow while distracting and keeping them off balance with the use of her drones, but of course, most enemies don't want to give her that ideal matchup. She doesn't have much capability in melee combat, but she's far from harmless. Her legs charging up kinetic energy as she moves, which can be discharged either to hurt the enemy or launch her away from them, or both, along with reactive armor for the same purpose - her main goal in melee combat is to disengage, helped both by those aspects and by her second spell, an illusory smokescreen.

Life[edit | edit source]

Not much is publicly known about Maddie's life before the Trial, due to her obscurity. But as she climbed through the ranks in Gluttony's selection, people took an interest and started to dig, managing to at least find her history in mech combat. It's fairly well known that she started her mech fighting at a young age with her dad's enthusiast group, and that she started out with her "mech" being a dinky pistol. She learned to work with the disadvantage though, becoming a crack shot and being good at hiding. Eventually, she started to go for local tournaments and won a couple, gaining enough favor for her mech to become something worthy of the name. A few local tournaments under her belt, she took a shot at Gluttony's selection, a surprise upset victor for her local tournament. And then the next one. And she kept winning, against mechs that had been in the game longer, against those who on paper should have been able to beat her, until she finally ended up as Gluttony's representative.

Role[edit | edit source]

TGG2

Maddie particpates in the second Trial, as the representative of Gluttony. An unknown who has nonetheless shown herself to be a contender through Gluttony's selection process, she has a lot to live up to.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Family[edit | edit source]

Madeline has a strong relationship with her family on the whole. They went through a lot together, and her bond with her dad and brothers in particular is what got her into mech fighting - and thus to where she is now. She gets homesick sometimes, wishing that they were in Hope with her. But she knows they'll be getting the tapes on every fight, so she has to do her best to put on a good showing.
