Tai

Personal information
Alias: Supernova
Age: 21 (TTG1)
31 (TTG2)
Gender: Male
Sin: Gluttony
Occupation: Mech Fighter
Family: Unknown

Tai is a professional mech pilot and one of the top 8 finalists in the contest to decide who to fight the Tenth God.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Tai works hard and plays hard. Like, really, really hard. As such, he's always wearing a big smile on his face, even when fighting, because he knows he's gonna "reward" himself with excessive partying. Tai is also very energetic due to this.

However, throughout the events of The Tenth God, his smile and optimism gradually erodes, as he descends into depression over frustration and hopelessness.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

A young man with short, red hair and yellow skin. He usually wears an unzipped jacket on top of his white shirt, a pair of sports jeans, and a pair of red sneakers. Fitting his personality, his clothing is generally very loose. He's of average height, but his bright smile makes him stand out in a crowd.

Mech Design[edit | edit source]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Tai's Mech was sleek, allowing swifter movements. Exhaust ports were laid all over the body, preventing overheating from the inside. The chest of the Mech was the biggest part of the Mech, and it housed the Fire-Shield system which powered the Mech. It also had four flame cannons attached to it. The arms and legs of the Mech were completely covered with orange armor plates, with yellow stripes from top to bottom. The back of the Mech was outfitted with powerful thrusters. The Mech's main features, however, were the large and powerful fists, colored in black with orange stripes connecting the joints. The armor plated on top of them were much tougher compared to the rest of the Mech. The palms contained mini-cannons which could shoot out laser blasts. The feet of the Mech were colored in black with a yellow heel. Finally, The Mech's head was completely covered by a red heatproof helmet with a black visor.

Tai's Mech was a SMD build whose powerful thrusters gave him incredible speed and handling, on the surface and in the air. It's fists were absolute jawbreakers, and on top of the velocity the rockets gave, the fists could deal devastating damage upon impact. It had minimal firepower, as the flame cannons on top of the chest could not actually be aimed, and only served as a way to repel enemy approaches, and the mini-cannons in the palms served the same purpose. Though his cannons' power was low, their fire rate was exceedingly high.

Tai's special ability was "Fire-Shield", which allowed him to take the heat generated from his thruster engines and turn it into a shield made of flames, coating his entire Mech. This shield offered excellent resistance against energy attacks and transferred high levels of heat to the opponent upon physical contact. It also reinforced Tai's fists with flames, powering them up. As long as the Fire-Shield was active, the Mech wouldn't overheat, but Tai still employed heatproof armoring to prevent backwards flow when the Fire-Shield was activated. This armoring was somewhat decent against other energy forms, but fared poorly against physical strikes.

His Signature was Nova Strike, wherein Tai turned his thrusters to maximum power and converted the heat into a powerful energy shield that gave incredibly high resistance against energy attacks. Following this he would blast toward the enemy, breaking any shielding they employed and delivering a powerful punch. Tai's own shield would dissipate shortly after the punch landed. The condition for this Signature Attack was "The opponent is in a defensive position and I have enough heat stored!". Though they were both heat-based energy shields, Nova Strike and Fire-Shield were not actually the same thing, and could not stack atop of each other.

Life[edit | edit source]

Tai was born in the plane of Gluttony, a runaway teenager after his father had gone mad after finding himself in crushing debt, setting the house on fire and killing him and his spouse.

As he lurked in city alleys with a belching stomach, he had a fortunate encounter with a homeless man, who taught him the value of working for what you want, and reaping the benefits.

Before he became homeless, he was fascinated by mech combat, ever eager to get involved himself. He worked part-time in local restaurants as he saved up money for a mech, sharing a small shelter with the homeless man. After an year of hard work, he took on the professional name "Supernova" and stepped into the local competition scene with a hand-designed mech, vaguely based on his childhood doodles.

He would then go on to enjoy moderate success as the fearsome rising star that left his opponent scarred physically and mentally for life, fighting against the meta with an outdated SMD build. With the prize money he had gathered, he was able to afford housing and enjoy a decently well-off life. Before he moved out of the shelter, he gave a portion of his money to the homeless man as a parting gift.

Throughout years of professional mech combat, he had fulfilled his materialistic desires by paying equal amounts of hard work in the arena, though when the opportunity to ascend to godhood presented itself, he could not help but accept the tempting offer, ready to pay up the effort needed to come out on top over the many fighters in Tempest.

Role[edit | edit source]

He was one of the competitors to reach the final stage of the tournament, though only enjoying a tasteless victory against Libra.

Throughout the tournament, Cardinal Losteye gradually increased her influence over him. First, she requested him to end the tournament somehow. Then, she stepped in out of the blue during his fight with Libra and shielded him from a blow against his wishes. And then, she crushed him in his rampage against what seemed to be a dirty assassination attempt from Hellfire Knight (in reality, a ploy to lure out Cardinal herself), when he wouldn't listen to her and stop fighting.

Afterwards, Tai attempted to make an effort to contribute to the tournament's cause by fighting in an exhibition round against the Gods, only to find himself utterly defeated by Ice Gryffin. The defeat turned out to be the last straw, and Tai quit the tournament amidst frustration and disillusion.

On his way home, he was shadowed and eventually cornered and abducted by Chronos. On the charges of forsaking his responsibilities by partaking in the tournament, Chronos took him to the boundless snowfields of Gluttony and intended to execute him. The attack was, however, suppressed due to Cardinal's intervention once again, and Chronos simply decided to leave him to freeze to death in the middle of nowhere.

At death's doorsteps, Tai and Cardinal shared their pasts with each other, hoping to reconcile before dying. Then, with Cardinal having used up her time, she disintegrated before his eyes, seemingly vanishing for good.

Shortly after, an Ancient by the name of Tejfidh took the opportunity and convinced him to become a host of hers, sustaining and guiding him to safety. Chronos attempted to enforce the exile again as he neared the cities, but was convinced that he was wrong in his judgment upon seeing that Tejfidh had rescued him.

On their way back, Tejfidh revealed that Cardinal was still alive, giving Tai an opportunity to make up to what was his initial responsibility, being the one who had accepted Cardinal's request in the first place. Hurrying to the next stop of the tournament, the Plane of Envy, to get Cardinal's attention, he was spotted by Aries there and was enlisted in a new conflict between the gods themselves, who had become split on how to deal with the Tenth God. In particular, Tai was made to fight in Aries' faction, instructed to put up a display so Cardinal could see that they weren't willing to give up on her.

All the disillusion returned to Tai as he found himself fighting under the gods' orders and rules again, but in the match against Astra (previously Silent Requiem), he finally realized what he should be responsible for before all else - his dreams, which had brought him to the arena in the first place, and went from cold feet into delivering a thrilling finish, in spite of the implications of Aries' instructions.

A mutual understanding over the values of the sport was established between the two fighters, and they became friends after the match, leaving the gods' trifles behind altogether. Tai also accepted Adam's request and saw Temperance's recovery, and patiently waited for the day when he could make up for what had happened in the tournament with a just rematch.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

After the events of the Tenth God, Tai holds a certain degree of distance with the gods out of distrust over how they view and use Mech Combat.

With Cardinal, he too maintains his distance, though he still genuinely hopes that she succeeds in her endeavors out of respect.

Differing from how he was before the tournament, Tai now places more emphasis on getting to know his opponents as people. Becoming fast friends with Adam seems to signal the first step towards that goal.
